Three roles in one hull
The object is a nef — a ship-shaped table ornament — and an automaton. It is also a clock. Those roles were meant to work together. The galleon stood on a princely table, marked the hours, and moved. What reads at first as pure display is also a machine: brass and steel carrying both the silhouette of a warship and the works that made it perform.

At 104 centimetres (3 ft 5 in) high the galleon is neither a trinket nor a shipyard model. It is large enough for masts, deck and figures to hold the eye across a board, yet still an ornament rather than furniture in its own right. Brass supplies colour and sheen; steel stiffens the structure and the moving parts. The height is part of the argument the object makes about wealth and technical command.
One of a small group
Two other similar models survive, one at the Château d'Écouen north of Paris and one in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The British Museum piece belongs to a type, not a solitary freak of ingenuity. Hans Schlottheim, working in southern Germany around 1585, produced a form that more than one court could want — which is why likenesses of this galleon can still be compared across three collections.
The story
The Mechanical Galleon is a nef: a ship formed to sit on a table rather than to take the water. It is also an automaton, and it serves as a clock. Hans Schlottheim made it in 1585, in southern Germany, from brass and steel. It stands 104 centimetres (3 ft 5 in) high. It is now in the British Museum in London.
A nef of this kind was a luxury for a court table. Plate and food could be arranged around it; the ship itself was the fixed centrepiece. Because this example is an automaton, it did more than catch the light. Clockwork could set parts of it in motion and mark the hours. Ceremony, timekeeping and spectacle met in a single body of metal.
It was once in the possession of Augustus, Elector of Saxony. He would have been one of the model courtiers shown on the ship — flattery built into the metalwork, with the ruler cast in miniature among his own display. Who first ordered the piece, and how it later left Saxon hands for London, is not settled in the facts to hand. What is secure is the maker, the date, the materials, the height, and the double identity as ornament and machine.
Two closely related galleons survive elsewhere, in France and in Austria. Schlottheim’s design was not a one-off marvel but a form that could be repeated for princely clients. That changes how the British Museum example should be read. It is rare, not singular: the product of a workshop that knew how to join a ship’s outline to the skills of the clockmaker.
At just over a metre, the galleon is large enough for deck and masts to carry real detail, and small enough to remain an object of the table. Brass gives the hull its colour; steel supports structure and movement. Nothing in that choice of metal is exotic for late-sixteenth-century precision craft. What is distinctive is the ambition of putting ship, clock and moving figure-work into one continuous fabric.
Why it mattered then
In the 1580s a court table was a stage. A nef already spoke of wealth and seaborne power without leaving the dining hall. Clockwork raised the claim. An automaton that kept time and moved turned a meal into a performance of technical command as well as rank. For Augustus of Saxony, to own such a piece — and to appear among its tiny courtiers — fitted a taste for objects in which art, mechanics and political self-image met. Schlottheim’s galleon answered that demand in brass and steel, at a scale large enough to dominate the board and fine enough to reward close looking.
Why it matters now
The galleon still matters because it refuses the categories museums often keep apart. It is sculpture, timepiece and moving machine in one body. Looking at it forces a clearer question about what decorative art meant when decoration could advance and chime. It also anchors a small surviving group: three related ships in London, Paris and Vienna, evidence of a shared court culture across southern Germany and its neighbours. For anyone tracing how complex mechanisms entered elite life before the industrial age, this is a dated, material case rather than a loose anecdote about ingenuity.
The surprising detail
Augustus, Elector of Saxony, who owned the galleon, would have been one of the model courtiers shown on the ship itself. The ruler was not only the audience for the spectacle; he was cast, in miniature, as part of the company on deck. Two other similar automata survive in France and Austria, so the gesture belonged to a repeatable type, not a single private joke in metal.
What is disputed
The path from Schlottheim’s workshop to the British Museum is not set out in the sources used here. The object is securely tied to Hans Schlottheim, to 1585, and to possession by Augustus, Elector of Saxony; the intermediate ownership trail is thin. Because two closely related pieces survive elsewhere, some features of mechanism and decoration are better read as traits of a type than as unique to this example.

Why does calling the Mechanical Galleon only a model ship miss what Schlottheim actually built?
Because its roles as nef, automaton and clock were not extras added to a static miniature. It was made to sit on a court table, mark time and move. The ship form carried ceremonial meaning; the clockwork made that meaning perform. Reduce it to a hull in miniature and you lose the reason a late-sixteenth-century prince wanted it on the board at all.
