The Terracotta Army

The grey terracotta we see today was never the intended appearance. These figures were mass-produced, then hand-finished, then covered in pigment that has mostly vanished.

Mould seams where the parts meet
The bodies were not sculpted whole. Legs were cast in moulds, as were torsos, arms and hands. You can see the joins: horizontal lines at the waist, vertical seams down the sides of limbs. After assembly, craftsmen smoothed some seams and left others visible. The system allowed rapid production of thousands of figures using a limited set of moulds, rotated and combined. Individualisation came later, in the details added by hand.
No two faces alike
Faces, hair and headgear were modelled individually after the body was assembled. Some scholars suggest they represent actual soldiers; others argue the variation was aesthetic rather than documentary. Either way, the faces were worked by hand. Eyes were incised, moustaches applied as separate clay coils, earlobes pierced. The degree of attention given to features that would be buried suggests the importance of the individual identity of each figure, even in an army numbering thousands.
Pigment surviving in crevices
The terracotta was a base, not a finish. Figures were coated with lacquer, then painted: pink for skin, red and blue and green and purple for garments, black for hair and armour straps. Most pigment has flaked away, but traces remain in folds of cloth, under arms, in the creases of collars. When excavated, some figures still carried enough colour to show the original scheme. Exposure to air causes rapid deterioration, which is one reason the majority remain unexcavated.
The story
On 29 March 1974, farmers digging a well outside Xi'an broke through into a subterranean vault. Inside were fragments of terracotta: a head, a torso, pieces of limbs. What they had found was part of a buried army, more than eight thousand life-sized figures arranged in military formation, interred with the first emperor of a unified China.
The figures date to 248 BC, part of the mausoleum complex for Qin Shi Huang. They were made quickly and in large numbers, using an assembly system that combined industrial efficiency with individual finish. Bodies were built from moulded sections: legs cast in two or four parts, torsos made in halves, arms and hands produced separately. The parts were luted together with liquid clay, and the seams were smoothed or left visible depending on where they fell. Heads were attached last.
Faces, by contrast, were modelled individually. No two are identical. Craftsmen added eyes, noses, mouths, ears and facial hair by hand, working the clay while it was still plastic. Some figures have broad faces, others narrow; some have moustaches, others are clean-shaven. Hair was built up in coils or carved in plaits. The variety is considerable, though it was achieved using a limited repertoire of features recombined in different ways.
Height varies by rank. Generals are taller than officers, officers taller than infantry. The figures were not sculpted in the pits where they now stand. They were made in workshops, fired in kilns, painted, then transported to the burial site and arranged in military order: infantrymen in columns, archers kneeling, officers standing apart, chariots drawn by terracotta horses.
The grey surface we see today is the colour of fired clay, not the intended appearance. Every figure was painted. Pigments included malachite green, azurite blue, cinnabar red, and a synthetic purple made from barium copper silicate, which may be the earliest known use of that compound. Flesh was pink, hair black, armour dark with bright lacings, robes patterned in contrasting colours. The paint was applied over a lacquer base, which gave it adhesion and sheen.
Most of the pigment is gone. Lacquer is stable underground but deteriorates rapidly when exposed to air and light. Excavators in the 1970s and 1980s watched paint curl and flake within minutes of uncovering a figure. Since then, techniques for stabilising pigment have improved, but the process remains difficult. This is one reason the majority of the army has been left in situ: excavation is, at present, a form of damage.
The pits are large. The first, discovered in 1974, contains an estimated six thousand figures. Two more pits were found nearby, one with cavalry and chariots, another apparently unfinished. A fourth pit was found empty. Other areas of the mausoleum complex have yielded non-military figures: acrobats, musicians, officials, birds cast in bronze. The tomb mound of the emperor himself has not been opened.
Why it mattered then
The terracotta army was a substitute. Qin Shi Huang unified China by force, and earlier rulers had been buried with retinues of actual soldiers, servants and horses, killed for the purpose. The terracotta figures represent a shift: the dead were replaced by images. Whether this was a reform motivated by practicality, expense, or scruple is not recorded, but the result was an enormous project of representation rather than sacrifice. The scale of the army mirrors the scale of the state. Qin Shi Huang standardised weights, measures, currency and the written script. He built roads, canals and the first phase of what became the Great Wall. The terracotta figures, mass-produced using modular systems but finished individually, reflect the same logic: centralised control, executed through repeatable processes, inflected by local variation. The army was not a portrait of actual troops but a model of military order, rendered permanent in clay.
Why it matters now
The terracotta army is now a museum and an active archaeological site. Most of the figures remain buried. The decision to leave them in place reflects a reversal: excavation, once the goal, is now understood as a risk. Conservation techniques have not kept pace with the curiosity that drives digging. The result is a kind of patience, a willingness to let evidence remain underground until it can be brought up without destroying what makes it evidence. The figures also demonstrate that what we see is rarely what was intended. The grey terracotta is an accident of decay. The original appearance — bright, patterned, particoloured — exists now only in fragments and in reconstruction. The gap between the object and its surviving state is unusually visible here, which makes the army useful for thinking about what else we see as original when it is, in fact, a remainder.
The surprising detail
The purple pigment found on some figures is a synthetic compound, barium copper silicate, which was not known to have been used anywhere else in the world until it was independently synthesised in Europe in the eighteenth century. Its presence on terracotta armour from 248 BC means that Chinese craftsmen had developed a method for producing it more than two thousand years earlier. The recipe has not been found in any surviving text, and how it was made remains a matter of reconstruction from the chemical evidence in the paint itself.
What is disputed
Whether the facial variation was intended to represent actual soldiers or was simply aesthetic diversity is disputed. Some scholars argue the figures are portraits; others point out that the variety can be achieved with a limited set of features and does not require individual sitters. The question remains unresolved.

Why would a production system that used moulds for bodies but individual modelling for faces be preferable to either sculpting every figure entirely by hand or casting every part, including faces, from moulds?
Moulding the bodies allowed rapid production of thousands of figures with structural consistency — legs that fit torsos, arms that attach at standard points, heights that correspond to rank. This was necessary to produce an army of this scale within a plausible timeframe. But identical faces would have made the figures interchangeable and anonymous, which would undercut the purpose of creating an army of individuals to accompany the emperor. Hand-modelling the faces preserved the sense that each figure was a person, not a replica, while still allowing the efficiency of modular assembly. The system balanced speed with specificity, industrial logic with individualisation.
