II · THE IDEA · ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Attention, Before the Maths

Transformers · 2014–2015, neural machine translation · Bahdanau et al., Luong et al.

A model reading "The bank was steep" cannot know which meaning of bank until it sees steep. Attention is the mechanism that lets every word look back and weight the context it needs.
