  1. The cross seen only from above

    Bete Giyorgis, the Church of Saint George, is cut in the shape of a Greek cross — four equal arms meeting at right angles. But this geometry is legible only if you stand at the rim of the trench and look down. From ground level, where worshippers enter, the building reads as a square block with a flat roof. The cross was carved for a viewpoint that ordinary use of the church does not provide. It is an architectural plan made into an elevation, a drawing rendered in stone and visible only to those who do not descend.

  2. Windows that were never openings

    The facades have windows, doors, columns and moulded frames — all the elements of built architecture. But none of these features were cut out and then fitted into place. Each window is a void carved into continuous rock. Each column was left standing as the stone around it was removed. The pilasters, capitals and lintels are not separate pieces; they are portions of the original mass that were shaped and then surrounded by empty space. What looks like construction is entirely subtraction. The architectural language is that of assembly, but the method is that of sculpture.

  3. The trench as threshold

    Each church sits at the bottom of a trench cut down through the bedrock. To reach Bete Giyorgis you descend a narrow passage through stone, sometimes roofed, sometimes open to the sky, until the floor of the excavation opens out and the church stands free. The trench isolates the building from the plateau, turning approach into descent and entry into emergence. The surrounding stone is not a wall added for enclosure — it is what remains of the rock that was there, now serving as the boundary of a courtyard that was carved rather than cleared.

The story

The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are a group of eleven monolithic structures excavated from the volcanic tuff of the western Ethiopian Highlands. They are not buildings in the usual sense. No stones were quarried and transported. No walls were raised, no roofs laid across them. Instead, the churches were carved downward and inward from the living rock, beginning at the surface of the plateau and cutting trenches, courtyards and finally the buildings themselves, until each church stood free inside the cavity that had been made around it.

The method is subtractive. The architects marked the plan on the exposed bedrock, then cut down through the stone to create a trench separating the future church from the surrounding mass. Once the trench was deep enough, they began carving the exterior walls, shaping facades, cutting windows and doors, forming columns and capitals. Then they hollowed out the interior, excavating downward and inward to create naves, aisles and vaults. What remains is a building that is continuous with the bedrock beneath it — rooted not by foundations but by the fact that it was never detached.

Bete Giyorgis, the Church of Saint George, is the most geometrically distinct. It is cut in the form of a Greek cross with four equal arms, and it sits alone in its own rock-cut courtyard, accessed by a tunnel through the stone. The cross plan is clear only from above; from the floor of the trench, the building appears as a rectilinear block with a flat roof. The walls rise in three stepped stages, each slightly recessed from the one below, and the surfaces are carved with blind arcading and moulded window frames that imitate the vocabulary of built architecture. But every element — every column, every arch, every decorative band — was made by removing the stone around it, not by adding it.

The eleven churches are distributed across two main groups, separated by a seasonal stream. Some are fully free-standing, isolated within their trenches. Others are semi-monolithic, with one or more walls still attached to the rock face from which they were cut. A few are entirely cave churches, excavated horizontally into a cliff rather than carved downward from above. The interiors preserve features typical of Ethiopian church architecture: columns, often with carved capitals; barrel vaults; domes on pendentives; and in some cases, wall paintings. The stone itself varies in colour and texture, and the carving is uneven in refinement — some surfaces are finely dressed, others left rough.

The churches are attributed to the 14th century, though traditions associating them with the earlier King Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty remain strong in local memory. The site is still in active religious use by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and it remains an important destination for pilgrimage. The buildings have been protected by modern shelters in recent decades, a response to weathering of the soft volcanic stone.

Why it mattered then

The rock-hewn churches represent a form of monumental religious architecture that required neither quarried stone nor timber — materials that were scarce in the highland environment. By carving downward into the bedrock, the builders avoided the need to transport heavy loads or to engineer scaffolding for vertical construction. The method was labour-intensive, but it used the one resource that was abundant: the volcanic tuff of the plateau itself. The churches also served a symbolic function. Traditions link the site to an attempt to recreate Jerusalem in Ethiopia, providing a place of pilgrimage for those who could not travel to the Holy Land. Whether or not this was the explicit intention, the churches created a sacred landscape that was both physically and spiritually distinct from the surrounding terrain. The act of descending into the rock to reach a place of worship echoed older traditions of cave churches and hermitages, while the scale and elaboration of the architecture asserted the presence of a powerful religious and political authority capable of commanding such an undertaking.

Why it matters now

The churches at Lalibela remain one of the most striking examples of subtractive architecture — buildings made by removal rather than assembly. They demonstrate that monumentality does not require construction in the conventional sense, and that a building can be both sculpture and structure, carved and inhabited at once. The site also raises questions about preservation. The volcanic tuff is soft and vulnerable to erosion, and the churches have been weathering since they were completed. Modern interventions, including the installation of protective shelters, have been necessary but contentious, altering the experience of the site and the relationship between the buildings and the sky. The churches are still in use, which means they are subject to the wear of ongoing ritual and pilgrimage, not frozen as museum objects. This tension — between active religious function and the demands of conservation — is central to the site's present condition. For contemporary architecture, Lalibela offers a model of building that is inseparable from its site. The churches could not be moved or replicated. They are not objects placed in a landscape but forms released from within it, and they remain physically continuous with the ground from which they were carved.

The surprising detail

The churches were carved from the top down, which means that any error in planning or execution could not be corrected by adding material — only by removing more. If a column was cut too thin, or a vault miscalculated, the mistake was permanent. The method required the architects to work with a complete three-dimensional understanding of the final form before the first cut was made, because the process was irreversible. There are no known working drawings, which suggests that the design was either held in memory, marked directly onto the stone, or both.

What is disputed

The dating of the churches is disputed. The 14th century is the period most commonly cited by scholars based on architectural and art-historical analysis, but local tradition attributes the churches to King Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty, who ruled in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. The tradition that the site was built to recreate Jerusalem is also not documented in contemporary sources, though it is widely repeated. The claim that construction took 24 years appears in some accounts but is not independently verified. These uncertainties do not diminish the significance of the site, but they mean that the historical narrative around Lalibela is less settled than is sometimes suggested.
