The eyebrows are flying dragons
The two arching strips above the eye openings read first as eyebrows. Look longer and each is a small dragon, head at the nose, wings swept back along the brow, tail curling at the temple. The heads meet at a boar's head cast in bronze, positioned where a human nose would be. The effect is that a face and a pair of creatures occupy the same space, legible depending on how you parse the metalwork.
Tinned bronze panels, not solid iron
The helmet is not forged from a single piece. It is built from an iron frame to which panels of tinned bronze have been attached. Tinning gives the surface a silvery finish rather than the warm brown of bare bronze. The decorated panels — face, crest, cheek guards — were worked separately and then fixed to the underlying structure. This is composite engineering: protective ironwork doing the structural work, decorative bronze doing the visual work.
Two reconstructions, thirty years apart
The helmet was excavated as several hundred corroded fragments, many no larger than a coin. The first reconstruction, completed in 1945–46, misunderstood the geometry: it produced a helmet too tall and too narrow. By 1970 it was clear the original shape had been wrong, and the entire assembly was taken apart. The second reconstruction, finished in 1971, is the version on display. Photographs of the 1946 version show a visibly different object — taller, with a pinched profile and misaligned decoration.
The story
The Sutton Hoo helmet was dug from the ground in the summer of 1939, weeks before the Second World War began. It came from Mound 1 at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, part of a ship burial that also contained gold buckles, a sword, a shield, and a collection of silver bowls and drinking vessels. The ship itself had rotted away, leaving only its impression in the soil and the iron rivets that once held its planks. The helmet was found near where the body would have lain, though no bone survived in the acidic sand.
It was not found intact. The iron had corroded and the structure had collapsed, leaving the excavators with hundreds of fragments, some recognisable — a cheek guard, part of the crest — and many not. The pieces were lifted, boxed, and stored. The site was backfilled, and the war began. The helmet would not be reassembled for six years.
The first reconstruction was undertaken in 1945 and 1946 by Herbert Maryon, a metalworker and conservator at the British Museum. Working without close parallels and with fragments whose original positions were often unclear, he produced a helmet that was too tall and too narrow. It was displayed in that form for more than two decades. By the late 1960s, comparison with similar helmets from Sweden and new analysis of the fragments made it clear the reconstruction was incorrect. In 1970 the helmet was disassembled and rebuilt by Nigel Williams, also at the British Museum. The current form — broader, lower, with the decorative panels properly aligned — is the result of that second effort.
The face is where the design does its most complicated work. The nose is a bronze boar's head, cast in the round, with small garnets for eyes. The eyebrows are inlaid bronze wire formed into the shape of two dragons, their heads meeting at the boar, their wings extending back along the brow line, their tails curling at the temples. Below the eyebrows are the eye openings, and below those a bronze moustache, also inlaid with wire. The effect is a human face made from animal parts, or alternatively a pair of animals arranged to suggest a human face. The ambiguity appears to be deliberate.
The crest — the strip running from front to back over the crown — is a bronze channel inlaid with silver wire, forming interlaced animal ornament. At the front it terminates in a small dragon's head; at the back, another. The cheek guards, which would have hung down to protect the sides of the face, are decorated with pressed foil panels showing warriors, some on horseback, some on foot, carrying spears and swords. The imagery is martial, but the execution is decorative. This was not purely functional armour.
The helmet is often associated with Rædwald, king of East Anglia in the early seventh century, though the identification is not certain. No inscription names the occupant of the burial, and the dating is based on the style of the grave goods and the coins found with them. Rædwald is a plausible candidate — he was a powerful king, and the burial is exceptionally rich — but the evidence does not settle the question. What is clear is that the person buried in Mound 1 was of high status, and that the helmet was among the most elaborate objects placed with them.
Why it mattered then
The helmet was both protection and display. It would have functioned in combat — the iron structure could turn a blade, and the cheek guards and neck guard offered coverage — but it was also a piece of visual rhetoric. The inlaid decoration, the gilding, the cast bronze fittings: these are expensive techniques, and they make the helmet legible at a distance as the equipment of someone important. The dragon-and-bird motifs connect it to a wider tradition of animal ornament in early medieval Europe, where creatures were used as symbols of power and protection. The boar, in particular, appears on other high-status helmets from the period, and in Old English poetry the boar is described as a guardian figure placed on helmets to protect the wearer. Whether the Sutton Hoo helmet was worn in battle or reserved for ceremony is unclear, but its design suggests it was meant to be seen, and to communicate status, as much as it was meant to absorb blows.
Why it matters now
The Sutton Hoo helmet has become the default image of Anglo-Saxon England, reproduced on book covers, museum posters, and currency. It appears on the 2017 British Museum £2 coin. It is shorthand for a period and a culture, in the way that the Parthenon frieze is shorthand for classical Greece. This is partly because it is visually striking, and partly because it was found in a context that captured public imagination: a ship burial, a king's treasure, a discovery made on the eve of war. The 1939 excavation was widely reported, and the find was framed as a national treasure at a moment when such framing had particular weight. The helmet's subsequent reconstructions — the fact that it had to be taken apart and rebuilt, that its present form is the result of scholarly revision — are less widely known. The object people recognise is the 1971 version, but the story of how it became that version is part of what makes it worth looking at closely.
The surprising detail
The helmet was the property of Edith Pretty, the landowner on whose estate the burial mounds stood. Under English law at the time, objects found on private land belonged to the landowner unless they qualified as Treasure Trove, which required proof that they had been hidden with intent to recover. A ship burial did not meet that test: it was a deliberate interment, not a concealed hoard. Pretty could have sold the finds or kept them. She donated the entire assemblage to the British Museum in 1939, shortly after the inquest. The donation was made during the war, and Pretty declined any compensation. She died in 1942.

The helmet and other objects from the Sutton Hoo burial were legally the property of Edith Pretty, the landowner, under the law in force at the time of discovery. She donated the entire assemblage to the British Museum in 1939. The finds remain in the museum's collection and are on permanent display. There is no active repatriation claim associated with the Sutton Hoo material.

Test yourself
The helmet's face is made of bronze panels on an iron frame. Why build it that way, rather than forging the entire helmet from iron or casting it entirely in bronze?
Because iron and bronze do different jobs well. Iron is strong and can be forged into a structure that absorbs impact, making it the practical choice for the load-bearing frame. Bronze is easier to decorate — it can be cast, inlaid, tinned, and gilded — making it the better choice for the visible surfaces. A solid iron helmet would be harder to ornament; a solid bronze helmet would be weaker and much heavier, since bronze is denser than iron. The composite construction lets the helmet be both functional and ornate, which matters if the object is meant to protect and to impress. The principle generalises: when an object has to do two things, it is often built from two materials.
