What do you do when you inherit a building made for a different faith? In Córdoba, the answer was to keep almost all of it and insert a cathedral into the centre.

The forest of columns
The interior is a grid of columns supporting two tiers of arches, one set riding on top of the other. The columns themselves are reused — brought from Roman buildings and earlier structures — and many are too short to create the height a large prayer hall needs. The double-tiered solution turns a constraint into a system: the lower arches spring from the column capitals, and the upper arches rest on piers above them, carrying the roof. The result is a space that feels both horizontal, because the columns repeat in every direction, and vertical, because the arches stack upward.
The alternating voussoirs
Each arch is built from alternating wedge-shaped blocks — voussoirs — of pale limestone and red brick. This is not decorative cladding applied after the fact; the voussoirs are structural, and the alternation is built into the masonry. The pattern is consistent across the building's expansions, suggesting it was understood as a defining feature of the mosque's identity. Whether the choice had a symbolic meaning, or was simply a practical way to distinguish materials during construction, is not recorded.
The inserted cathedral
In the 16th century, a Renaissance cathedral nave and transept were built into the centre of the mosque. This required removing part of the column forest to make room for a tall, vaulted crossing and choir. The cathedral section rises above the surrounding roof and is visible from outside as a distinct mass. The insertion was controversial even at the time; according to later accounts, the city council opposed it, though the project went ahead with royal approval. The result is a building with two centres: the Islamic mihrab to the south, and the Christian altar in the middle.
The story
The Great Mosque of Córdoba was begun in 786 on the orders of Abd al-Rahman I, the founder of the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba. According to traditional accounts, the site had previously held a Visigothic church, though this remains a matter of scholarly debate. What is certain is that Abd al-Rahman set out to build a congregational mosque for a city that was becoming the political and cultural centre of Islamic Iberia.
The building was expanded several times over the next two centuries. Abd al-Rahman III added a minaret, completed in 958. His son, al-Hakam II, extended the prayer hall southward and added a new mihrab — the niche indicating the direction of Mecca — and a maqsurah, an enclosed area for the ruler, both finished in 971 and richly decorated. Each expansion followed the same structural logic: more columns, more arches, more repetition of the double-tiered system.
The columns themselves were not made for this building. They were brought from Roman structures and earlier sites, which is why they vary in height, diameter and style. The architects turned this heterogeneity into a coherent system by using the double tier of arches to equalise the heights and distribute the load. The lower arches are horseshoe-shaped, a form common in Visigothic and early Islamic architecture of the region. The upper arches are semicircular. Together, they create a rhythm that carries across the entire interior.
In 1236, Córdoba was captured by the Christian forces of Castile during the Reconquista. The mosque was consecrated as a cathedral. For nearly three centuries, the building remained largely intact, with only minor modifications to accommodate Christian liturgy. Then, in the 16th century, a major project inserted a new Renaissance cathedral nave and transept into the centre of the mosque. This required removing a section of the column forest and raising a new structure with a dome, vaults and a choir. The former minaret was converted into a bell tower and significantly remodelled.
The insertion was not universally welcomed. Later accounts report that the city council opposed the project, and that when the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V visited the completed cathedral, he is said to have regretted the alteration, though the reliability of this anecdote is uncertain. What is clear is that the building from the 16th century onward was both mosque and cathedral, its Islamic structure intact except where the new nave interrupted it.
Modern restorations, beginning in the 19th century, have worked to recover and study the building's Islamic-era elements. Today, the structure serves as the cathedral of Córdoba, with daily Mass celebrated inside it. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Spain's most visited monuments.
Why it mattered then
The Great Mosque was a statement of political and religious authority. Abd al-Rahman I was establishing a new emirate in Iberia, independent from the Abbasid caliphate in Baghdad, and the mosque was a visible sign of that independence. Its scale and the ambition of its double-tiered arches signalled that Córdoba was not a provincial outpost but a capital. The expansions under Abd al-Rahman III and al-Hakam II reinforced this. The new mihrab and maqsurah were decorated with mosaics and carved stone, materials and techniques associated with imperial architecture. The minaret made the mosque visible across the city and the surrounding countryside. The building was not just a place of prayer; it was a symbol of the Umayyad presence in al-Andalus, and of the wealth and sophistication of the Cordoban court.
Why it matters now
The Great Mosque of Córdoba is one of the most significant surviving examples of early Islamic architecture in the western Mediterranean. Its double-tiered arches influenced later buildings across the region, and its use of alternating voussoirs became a recognisable feature of what is now called Moorish architecture. The building also raises questions about heritage and religious identity. It is both a mosque and a cathedral, and its current status — as a functioning Catholic church that retains its Islamic structure — makes it a point of ongoing debate. Some groups have called for it to be reopened for Muslim prayer, while others argue that its identity as a cathedral is now centuries old. The building does not resolve this tension; it holds it. That is part of what makes it significant: it is a place where different histories are layered on top of one another, and where the question of what a building means is still being contested.
The surprising detail
The cathedral insertion in the 16th century removed part of the column forest, but the rest of the mosque structure was left standing. This is unusual. When Christian forces took control of mosques elsewhere in Iberia, they often demolished them entirely and built new churches on the sites. In Córdoba, the decision was made to keep the mosque and adapt it. The result is that the Islamic structure is not a ruin or a fragment; it is the majority of the building, still intact, still defining the space. The cathedral sits inside it, not on top of it.
What is disputed
Whether a Visigothic church stood on the site before the mosque is disputed. The traditional account is repeated in many sources, but archaeological evidence is inconclusive, and some scholars have questioned whether the church existed as described. The anecdote about Charles V regretting the cathedral insertion is also a later tradition, not a contemporary record.

Why does the double-tiered arch system make the mosque easier to expand than a building with a single set of arches?
Because the system is modular and directionally neutral. Each bay — one column with its arches — is structurally similar to the next, and the grid can be extended in any direction without requiring a new structural logic. A building with a single tier of arches often has a clear axis, a front and a back, and expanding it means either lengthening that axis or adding side aisles that read as secondary. The double-tiered system in Córdoba has no primary axis within the column forest itself; the direction toward Mecca is indicated by the mihrab, not by the structure. This meant that each successive ruler could add more bays to the south, east or west, and the addition would feel like a continuation of the same space rather than an appendage. The system's repetition is what makes it expandable.
