  1. Shell and lapis inlay in a rosette pattern

    The board is decorated with geometric patterns formed from pieces of shell and lapis lazuli set into bitumen. Five of the squares carry rosette designs. These rosettes are not merely ornamental: the cuneiform tablet describing the rules singles out certain squares as special, and it is likely that landing on a rosette square carried particular significance in play, perhaps offering protection from capture or granting an extra turn.

  2. An asymmetric track

    The board has twenty squares arranged in an unusual configuration: two rows of three squares on each end, connected by a central bridge of two rows with four squares each. The path the pieces follow is not immediately obvious from looking at the board alone. Players do not simply race around a loop. Instead, each player enters from one end, shares part of the track with their opponent in the middle section, then exits from their own side. The asymmetry means position matters: some squares are safer than others.

  3. Tetrahedral dice, not cubic

    The game was played with three pyramid-shaped dice, each with four sides. Two corners were marked, two were not. You threw all three and counted how many marked corners landed face-up, giving you a result between zero and three. This is a different probability distribution from two six-sided dice: getting a two is far more likely than getting a zero or a three. That uneven weighting would have shaped strategy, making certain moves safer bets than others.

The story

Leonard Woolley's expedition to the Royal Cemetery at Ur between 1922 and 1934 unearthed several game boards from graves dated to around 2600 BC. They were luxury objects: wood inlaid with shell, red limestone, and lapis lazuli, the blue stone imported from what is now Afghanistan. Woolley found them in high-status burials, including one in a tomb he designated as belonging to a queen. The boards were grave goods, placed with the dead, which tells us the game mattered enough to accompany someone into the afterlife.

But a beautiful board does not tell you how to play. For that, we rely on a cuneiform tablet written by a Babylonian scribe named Itti-Marduk-balāṭu in the second century BC, roughly two thousand four hundred years after the boards Woolley found were made. The tablet is damaged and incomplete, but it describes a game that fits the physical layout of the Ur boards. It names the game, gives instructions for moving pieces, and refers to certain squares as carrying particular rules. Irving Finkel, a curator at the British Museum and a specialist in cuneiform, used the tablet to reconstruct a playable version of the game.

The rules, as Finkel interprets them, describe a race. Each player has a set of pieces that must travel along a path from one end of the board to the other. You roll the tetrahedral dice and move accordingly. The middle section of the board is shared: both players' pieces occupy the same squares, and if you land on a square occupied by your opponent, you capture their piece and send it back to the start. The rosette squares appear to offer safety from capture. The first player to move all their pieces off the board wins.

This is a game of the tables family, a broad category that includes backgammon. It combines luck and strategy: the dice govern what moves are possible, but the player chooses which piece to move and when to risk advancing into contested squares. The element of chance gave the game a divinatory dimension. Ancient players believed the outcome reflected the will of the gods, and that events in the game could predict future events in life. The tablet itself frames the game in religious terms, associating certain moves with deities.

The game spread widely. Boards and pieces have been found across the Middle East, and as far afield as Crete and Sri Lanka. It remained popular for millennia, though the evidence thins in late antiquity. At some point it stopped being played in most places, possibly displaced by other games or evolving into a different form. One community, however, kept playing: the Jewish population of Kochi in southern India played a version called Aasha until the mid-twentieth century, when many emigrated to Israel. Whether Aasha is a direct descendant of the Game of Ur or a parallel development is uncertain, but the resemblance is close.

Why it mattered then

Play is social, and a game is a set of agreed constraints. The Royal Game of Ur was played across a wide geography and a long span of time, which suggests the rules were stable enough to be recognised and transmitted. That stability implies something about Sumerian and later Mesopotamian society: there were contexts in which people from different cities or different generations could sit down together and understand the same system of turns, captures, and victory conditions. The game also had a religious function. The cuneiform tablet associates moves and outcomes with gods, and the act of playing was understood as a form of divination. The throw of the dice was not random in the modern sense; it was an expression of divine will. A player's success or failure in the game could be interpreted as a message about their standing with the gods or their prospects in an undertaking. This is not unique to Ur—many ancient games carried spiritual weight—but it reminds us that leisure and ritual were not separate categories.

Why it matters now

The Game of Ur is one of the oldest games for which we have both the physical object and a written description of the rules. That combination is rare. We have older game boards, but no instructions. We have references to games in texts, but no surviving boards. Here we have both, even though they are separated by two millennia. That gap is itself instructive: it shows that a game can remain recognisable across enormous stretches of time, passed along by people who played it, until someone finally wrote it down. Play is one of the few activities we can reconstruct with confidence across such distances. We can speculate about ancient rituals, labour practices, or domestic life, but the evidence is often fragmentary and the interpretations contested. A game, by contrast, is a closed system with explicit rules. If the rules are recorded and the board survives, we can play it as they played it. That makes the Game of Ur an unusual kind of historical evidence: not a representation of an action, but the action itself, preserved in a form we can repeat.

The surprising detail

The game was still being played in one community in the twentieth century. The Jewish population of Kochi, a port city in Kerala, India, played a game called Aasha that closely resembles the Game of Ur in board layout and gameplay. They continued playing it until the 1950s, when many emigrated to Israel. How Aasha reached Kochi, and whether it descends directly from the Mesopotamian game or arose independently, is uncertain. But the resemblance is close enough that when Irving Finkel was working on his reconstruction of the Ur rules, he consulted accounts of Aasha to fill in gaps in the cuneiform tablet. If Aasha is indeed a descendant, it means the game survived for over four thousand years, transmitted orally or by demonstration, never quite forgotten.

What is disputed

The cuneiform tablet is incomplete, and some of the rules Finkel reconstructed involve educated guesses based on the structure of the board and parallels with other ancient race games. Scholars agree on the general shape of the game—a race with capture—but details such as the exact number of pieces per player, the starting arrangement, and the precise function of the rosette squares remain open to interpretation. The connection between the Game of Ur and the game called Aasha, played in Kochi until the mid-twentieth century, is also uncertain. The resemblance is strong, but whether Aasha is a direct descendant or an independent development that happened to converge on a similar design is not established.

How it got here

The board was excavated by Leonard Woolley during his work at the Royal Cemetery at Ur between 1922 and 1934. The excavation was a joint project between the British Museum and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and finds were divided between the two institutions under the terms of the excavation permit, a practice standard at the time. Iraq has since raised concerns about objects removed during the colonial and mandate periods, and discussions about the repatriation of archaeological material from Mesopotamian sites are ongoing. The British Museum's position is that the objects were acquired legally under the agreements in force at the time, and that they are held in trust for global access and research.

A game is a rule system that can survive without writing, but writing lets us check our reconstruction against what the players themselves said.
