A long oval bronze shield facing, divided into three panels, each centred on a large circular boss surrounded by smaller raised roundels and curving tendrils in repoussé work. The bronze is dark with patina and shows red glass inlay in some of the roundels.

The Battersea Shield

Celtic · c. 350 BC · Bronze sheet on wood (lost)

Bronze sheet hammered into swirling patterns over a wooden core, then thrown into the river. It would buckle under a single blow, which suggests it was never meant to take one.

Parameters are numbers the model learns. Weights are parameters that multiply inputs. Layers are groups of operations. Activations are numbers flowing through. The words are not interchangeable.

Tehuelche · Sprayed mineral pigment on ignimbrite · c. 7300 BC–AD 700

Almost all the hands are left hands, not because the artists were left-handed but because they held the spray pipe in their right. A signature that doubles as a record of technique.
