Coins became clasps. French francs and Maria Theresa thalers were melted, hammered, and shaped into triangular brooches that held a woman's cloak and carried her family's wealth on her body.

An Asmat Bisj Pole

The Asmat carve a single mangrove upside down, turning its root buttress into an openwork blade. The pole is raised for the dead, used once, then abandoned to rot in the forest.
