Sinan's Selimiye Mosque

Eight piers, not four
Most domed buildings place the dome on four corner supports, creating a square plan with heavy masses at the cardinal points. Sinan set eight piers in an octagonal arrangement, each slender in profile, so that the dome appears to rest on a ring of supports rather than four anchors. The result is a perimeter that reads as open rather than closed, with the structural logic distributed around the circumference instead of concentrated at the corners.
Windows in three tiers
The dome sits on a drum pierced by windows all the way around its base. Below that, the walls carry two more tiers of windows, aligned vertically so that light enters from three levels at once. The effect, particularly on a clear day, is that the dome seems to float above the prayer hall rather than press down on it. This is a direct answer to Hagia Sophia, where the dome's weight is more legible in the mass of the pendentives.
Iznik tiles at the qibla wall
The interior is largely bare plaster and stone, with colour concentrated at the qibla wall — the one that faces Mecca. Panels of Iznik tiles, made in workshops about two hundred kilometres south, cover the mihrab niche and the adjacent surfaces in blue, turquoise, red and green floral patterns. The restraint elsewhere makes this wall the clear focal point, both visually and liturgically.
The story
Sinan was past eighty when construction began on the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, the former Ottoman capital northwest of Istanbul. He had been chief imperial architect for nearly half a century, overseeing hundreds of projects across the empire. He had built bridges, aqueducts, palaces, and dozens of mosques, including the Süleymaniye in Istanbul, completed twenty years earlier. The Selimiye was commissioned by Sultan Selim II, and Sinan later described it in his autobiographical accounts as the work in which he had finally answered the challenge of Hagia Sophia.
That challenge was structural. Hagia Sophia's dome, built a thousand years earlier, spans nearly thirty-two metres and appears to float above the nave, supported on pendentives that mediate between the circular dome and the square plan below. It was the largest dome in the world for centuries, and it remained the reference point for Ottoman architects. Sinan's solution was not to match its diameter — the Selimiye's dome is slightly smaller — but to refine the way the load is carried.
He placed eight piers in an octagonal ring, each one slender enough that the plan reads as open rather than enclosed. The dome rests on these piers through a system of arches and pendentives, but the visual effect is that the weight has been distributed around a perimeter rather than concentrated at four corners. The interior, as a result, is a single volume with no heavy masses interrupting the sightlines. You can stand anywhere in the prayer hall and see the dome overhead without a column blocking the view.
The structure is surrounded by four minarets, each over seventy metres tall, placed at the corners of the mosque's courtyard rather than at the corners of the prayer hall itself. This moves the vertical accents outward, so that the dome remains the central feature when seen from a distance. The minarets are slender and fluted, with three balconies each, and they frame the mosque without competing with it.
The mosque was completed in 1575. Sinan lived another thirteen years, during which he continued to work, but he identified the Selimiye as the culmination of his career. Whether it actually surpasses Hagia Sophia is a matter of definition — the two buildings serve different liturgies and were built with different technologies — but Sinan's claim is that he had solved the problem of the dome more elegantly, with less mass and more light.
The building sits on a hill above Edirne, visible from much of the surrounding plain. The city had been the Ottoman capital before the conquest of Constantinople, and it remained an important administrative and military centre. The mosque was both a religious foundation and a statement of imperial presence in a border region. It included a complex of associated buildings: a school, a library, a covered market, and a hospital, all arranged around the mosque in a planned urban ensemble.
Why it mattered then
The Selimiye was built in a former capital that still held symbolic and strategic importance. Edirne was the city where Ottoman sultans traditionally stopped before military campaigns into Europe, and it remained a centre for Janissary recruitment and training. A monumental mosque there reinforced the sultan's authority in a region that was both a frontier and a historical seat of power. For Sinan, the building was a demonstration of technical mastery at the end of a long career. He had refined the Ottoman mosque form over decades, and the Selimiye represented his answer to the question of how to create an open, unified interior beneath a large dome. The eight-pier system was not entirely new — he had experimented with it in earlier buildings — but here it was executed at a scale and with a clarity that made the structural logic legible. The mosque also functioned as a kulliye, a complex that provided social services. The associated buildings — school, hospital, market — were endowed by the sultan and operated as part of the religious foundation. This was standard practice for major Ottoman mosques, but the Selimiye's kulliye was unusually complete, and it made the mosque a functioning centre of urban life rather than an isolated monument.
Why it matters now
The Selimiye is studied as a solution to a specific architectural problem: how to span a large interior space with a dome while minimising the visual obstruction of the supports. Sinan's eight-pier system distributes the load in a way that allows the interior to read as a single volume, and this has influenced later architects working with domed structures. The building also represents a moment when Ottoman architecture had developed its own vocabulary, distinct from both Byzantine precedents and contemporary European forms. The dome is not simply a tribute to Hagia Sophia; it is an argument about how to improve on it, using different structural principles and a different spatial logic. The mosque remains in use, and it is the most prominent building in Edirne. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it continues to be discussed in architectural scholarship as an example of how a mature building tradition solves inherited problems. Sinan's claim that this was his masterwork has been taken seriously by historians, not because it is the largest or most decorated of his buildings, but because it is the one in which the structure and the space are most clearly resolved.
The surprising detail
Sinan's autobiography exists in at least five different versions, compiled by associates and biographers during and after his lifetime. They do not always agree on dates, attributions, or the number of buildings he designed. Some list over three hundred structures; others give different totals. The claim that the Selimiye was his masterwork appears in multiple accounts, but the exact wording varies, and scholars continue to debate which version best represents Sinan's own voice. What is clear is that by the time the mosque was finished, Sinan was recognised as the most important architect in the empire, and the Selimiye was understood as the culmination of his work.
