Where Big Sky Country Meets the Mighty Missouri River
Bismarck sits on the AMAZING Missouri River - one of the longest rivers in North America! The Missouri River is 2,341 miles long and flows right through the heart of the city. Before bridges were built, steamboats would travel up the river bringing supplies and people to this frontier town. Today, the river is a beautiful place for fishing, boating, and walking along the riverfront trails!

Here's a cool fact: Bismarck is named after Otto von Bismarck, a famous German prince and leader! In the 1870s, the Northern Pacific Railroad wanted German investors to help pay for building the railroad across America. To make them happy, they named the city after Germany's most powerful leader. It worked - the Germans invested money, the railroad got built, and the city got a unique name!
Bismarck is the only U.S. state capital named after a foreign leader!
North Dakota's State Capitol is TOTALLY different from most capitol buildings! Instead of having a dome like most state capitols, it's a 19-story ART DECO SKYSCRAPER! Built in 1934, it's the tallest building in North Dakota at 241 feet tall. People call it the "Skyscraper on the Prairie" because you can see it for miles across the flat prairie lands!
You can take an elevator to the 18th floor observation deck and see for MILES across the prairie! On a clear day, you can see forever - it's absolutely amazing!
In 1804-1806, the famous explorers Lewis and Clark traveled through this area on their expedition to the Pacific Ocean! They spent the winter of 1804-1805 at Fort Mandan, just north of Bismarck. This is where they met Sacagawea, the Shoshone woman who became their guide and translator! She was only about 16 years old and had a baby on her back during the whole journey!
Long before Bismarck existed, this land was home to the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara tribes - together called the Three Affiliated Tribes. They built incredible earth lodges (houses made of wood and earth that could hold multiple families!), hunted buffalo, and grew crops along the Missouri River. Today, you can visit the North Dakota Heritage Center to learn about their fascinating history and culture!
These dome-shaped houses were HUGE - up to 40 feet across! They stayed warm in winter and cool in summer. Multiple families lived together in each lodge!
The tribes used every part of the buffalo - meat for food, hides for clothing and tipis, bones for tools. Nothing was wasted!
North Dakota has experienced an incredible energy boom! The state produces TONS of oil and has massive wind farms with giant turbines that generate clean electricity! You can see oil pumps (called "nodding donkeys") and wind turbines across the prairie. North Dakota is now one of the top oil-producing states in America!

Let's talk about Bismarck's EXTREME weather! Bismarck can get REALLY cold in winter - sometimes below -30Β°F! But summers can be HOT, reaching over 100Β°F! The temperature difference between the coldest winter day and hottest summer day can be over 130 degrees! That's WILD! But the people who live here are tough and know how to have fun in all kinds of weather!

North Dakota is one of America's biggest farming states! The prairie soil is incredibly rich and perfect for growing wheat, sunflowers, barley, and soybeans. Driving through the area, you'll see golden wheat fields stretching to the horizon! North Dakota grows so much wheat that it could make billions of loaves of bread every year!
Bismarck keeps its Old West heritage alive! The city celebrates with rodeos, western festivals, and the State Fair every summer. You can visit historic Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park where General Custer lived before the Battle of Little Bighorn. The park has reconstructed earth lodges and military buildings - it's like stepping back in time!
