Raleigh has an awesome nickname: "The City of Oaks!" Why? Because giant oak trees are EVERYWHERE - lining the streets, shading the parks, and making the whole city feel like a magical forest! Here's something amazing: Raleigh was PLANNED to be the state capital from the very beginning! In 1788, North Carolina leaders wanted a capital city that was right in the CENTER of the state, so everyone could reach it easily. They bought 1,000 acres of land, designed the city from scratch, and named it after Sir Walter Raleigh, who tried to start the first English colony in America!
Built in 1840, North Carolina's State Capitol is a National Historic Landmark! It's made of beautiful granite and has a stunning copper dome. You can take tours and see where state laws are made!
Raleigh LOVES music! The city has an incredible live music scene with concerts almost every night! From bluegrass to rock to hip-hop, you can hear it all. The city hosts the famous Hopscotch Music Festival where over 100 bands perform across downtown - it's like the whole city becomes one giant concert venue!
Raleigh has more music venues per capita than almost any city in America!
Raleigh has some of the COOLEST museums in the Southeast! The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is the largest natural history museum in the Southeast - and it's FREE! You can see massive dinosaur skeletons, touch a moon rock, watch scientists work in real labs, and even explore a three-story globe called "The Daily Planet!"
The NC Museum of Art has a 164-acre museum park - one of the largest in the world! You can see beautiful art inside AND walk through outdoor sculptures in the park!
Raleigh is CRAZY about sports! The Carolina Hurricanes (NHL hockey team) play here, and when they win, fans do something super fun called "Storm Surge" - the whole team celebrates on the ice in creative ways! The city also has college sports at NC State, where the fans are some of the loudest and most passionate in the country!
The Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup championship in 2006! The whole city went WILD with celebrations! Hockey might seem unusual for the South, but Raleigh loves its Canes!

North Carolina is called "First in Flight" because the Wright Brothers made the first successful airplane flight at Kitty Hawk, NC in 1903!
