Where Football Fever Meets Innovation
Columbus is HOME to Ohio State University, and when it comes to college football, this city goes ABSOLUTELY CRAZY! The Ohio State Buckeyes play in "The Horseshoe" - Ohio Stadium - which holds over 102,000 screaming fans! That's more people than live in many entire cities! On game days, the whole city turns scarlet and gray, and you can hear the roar of the crowd from miles away!

A buckeye is a NUT from the Ohio buckeye tree! It's shiny, dark brown, and has a lighter spot that looks like the eye of a deer (that's why it's called a "buck-eye"!). Ohio is nicknamed "The Buckeye State," and people from Ohio are called "Buckeyes." The nut itself is poisonous to eat, but people make candy buckeyes - chocolate and peanut butter treats shaped like the real thing - and they're DELICIOUS!
Ohio State fans carry real buckeye nuts as good luck charms!
Columbus has one of the BEST library systems in America! The downtown Main Library is INCREDIBLE - it looks like a modern castle! But here's the coolest part: the Columbus Metropolitan Library system has a TOPIARY PARK! It's a park where bushes are trimmed into the shapes of people and objects from a famous painting called "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte!" It's like a living 3D painting made of plants!
The Topiary Park has 54 people, 8 boats, 3 dogs, a monkey, and a cat - all made from bushes! It took 12 years to create this living masterpiece!
Columbus is not just Ohio's capital - it's also the BIGGEST city in the entire state! With nearly 900,000 people (and over 2 million in the metro area), it's larger than Cleveland and Cincinnati! The city keeps growing and growing. Why? Because Columbus has great jobs, awesome universities, and a super friendly vibe that makes people want to live here!
Columbus has an AMAZING arts scene! The Short North Arts District is packed with over 80 galleries, studios, and boutiques. On the first Saturday of every month, they have "Gallery Hop" where thousands of people walk the streets, visit galleries, listen to live music, and enjoy street performers. It's like one giant party celebrating creativity!
Columbus has a special secret: it's one of America's favorite "TEST CITIES!" Why? Because the city's population is so diverse and represents America so well, companies LOVE to test new products here first! Fast food restaurants test new menu items in Columbus. Tech companies launch new apps here. If something works in Columbus, it usually works across the whole country!
Wendy's hamburgers was FOUNDED in Columbus in 1969! The original restaurant was named after founder Dave Thomas's daughter. Now it's a worldwide chain!
Columbus is also home to several major companies including Express, Victoria's Secret, and Bath & Body Works - all headquartered right here!
COSI (Center of Science and Industry) is one of the COOLEST science museums in America! It's HUGE - over 300,000 square feet of hands-on exhibits! You can experience a high-wire unicycle ride, see real space artifacts, explore the ocean, and even watch live science shows where things explode (safely!) and shoot across the room! There's a giant model human body you can walk through and learn how all your organs work!

Columbus was DESIGNED to be Ohio's capital! In 1812, Ohio lawmakers wanted a capital city in the center of the state. They chose this spot on the Scioto River and named it after Christopher Columbus. The city was carefully planned with wide streets, public squares, and space for the State Capitol building. Today, you can tour the beautiful Ohio Statehouse - it took 22 years to build and has a stunning rotunda!
Columbus has become a MAJOR food city! The North Market downtown has been around since 1876 and has amazing local food vendors. But Columbus is also famous for unusual local foods like Buckeye candy (chocolate peanut butter balls), Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams (started in Columbus and now shipped nationwide!), and Schmidt's Sausage Haus with its giant cream puffs!
