2002 Winter Olympics

In 2002, Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Olympics and it was AMAZING! Athletes from 77 countries came to compete. The Olympics brought the whole world to Utah!

The 2002 Olympics had some incredible moments:

• The opening ceremony had 55,000 people and was watched by 2 billion people on TV!
• The Olympic flame was lit by the 1980 U.S. Hockey team - the "Miracle on Ice" team
• Utah built amazing venues like the Utah Olympic Park where you can still watch ski jumpers fly!
• The games made $100 million profit - one of the only Olympics to make money!

2034 Winter Olympics

Guess what? The Olympics are coming back! Salt Lake City will host the 2034 Winter Olympics, making it the only U.S. city to host twice! They're using all the same venues from 2002, which are still in perfect condition.

Utah has kept all its Olympic venues working since 2002. Kids in Utah can learn to ski jump, bobsled, and speed skate at the same places where Olympic champions competed! The Utah Olympic Park even has a museum where you can see Olympic medals and try a virtual ski jump!

The Pioneer Story

On July 24, 1847, a group of Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. When Brigham Young saw the valley, he said, "This is the place!" Those three words became Utah's most famous quote!

The pioneers had traveled 1,300 miles from Illinois, crossing plains, rivers, and mountains with covered wagons and handcarts. Some pioneers even walked the whole way pulling handcarts! When they arrived, the valley was a desert, but they built irrigation systems and made it bloom.

Temple Square

The pioneers built Temple Square in the center of Salt Lake City. The Salt Lake Temple took 40 years to build (1853-1893)! The granite blocks were so heavy that it took four oxen to pull each one from the canyon 20 miles away.

Today, Temple Square gets 5 million visitors every year - more than the Grand Canyon! During Christmas, they put up 100,000 lights that make it look like a winter wonderland. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, one of the most famous choirs in the world, performs there every week.
