  1. The wound

    A penetrating injury to the upper left back, beneath the shoulder blade. It was not visible on the surface until CT scanning in 2012 revealed the damage to underlying tissue and bone. The angle and position suggest a blade entering from behind. Whether this was the cause of death cannot be stated with certainty — the soft tissue is gone — but the wound is consistent with a fatal stabbing. No healing is evident, which means death came quickly if this was indeed the killing blow.

  2. Tattoos

    Infrared imaging published in 2018 identified figural tattoos on the right shoulder and upper arm: a wild bull and a Barbary sheep, both rendered in dark pigment. They are among the earliest known figurative tattoos preserved on human skin. The bull's horns are clearly delineated; the sheep is shown in profile. The placement on the upper arm and shoulder is typical of display tattoos meant to be seen, not hidden. A second body from the same grave group, a female, also bears tattoos.

  3. Ginger hair

    The scalp retains hair described in museum records as ginger-coloured. This is the natural colour: there is no evidence of dyeing in predynastic Egypt, and the reddish tone results from the chemistry of desiccation in hot sand. The hair is short and lies close to the skull. Its survival, along with skin, nails, and some soft tissue, is the result of rapid dehydration in the grave environment, not intentional preservation.

The story

He was placed in a shallow pit on the eastern slope of a hill at Gebelein, in Upper Egypt, sometime around 3400 BC. The grave was dug into sand. His body was laid on its left side, knees drawn up to the chest in a flexed position typical of burials in this period. Pots and flint tools were placed nearby, though these objects were not kept with the body after excavation and their current location is unknown.

The sand did what no embalmer had yet thought to do. It drew moisture out of the tissue faster than bacteria could colonise it. The result was not decay but desiccation: skin, hair, nails and some soft tissue survived, along with the skeleton. This was not mummification in the later Egyptian sense — no evisceration, no natron, no linen wrapping with resin. It was preservation by geology.

Six bodies were excavated from the site in 1896 by Wallis Budge, then Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum. Two are identified as male, one as female; the sex of the others remains uncertain. All were buried in flexed positions. Some retained coverings: basketry, linen, wicker, fur, bandages. These may have been practical wrappings rather than ritual trappings, though the distinction is not always clear in predynastic contexts.

The best-preserved body, catalogued as EA 32751, has been on display in the British Museum since 1901. For decades it was shown as evidence of natural mummification, a geological accident that preceded the deliberate techniques of later dynasties. In 2012, CT scanning revealed something the surface had not: a blade wound beneath the left shoulder blade, penetrating deep into the tissue. The angle is consistent with a stab from behind. No evidence of healing is visible, which suggests death came quickly.

Infrared imaging published in 2018 added another layer. The right shoulder and upper arm bear tattoos: a wild bull and a Barbary sheep, rendered in dark pigment. The body is sometimes called Ginger, after the colour of the hair, though the British Museum has moved away from that nickname in recent displays. The current installation places the body in a reconstructed sand grave in Room 64. The label identifies it as a person, not a specimen.

Why it mattered then

Predynastic Egypt had not yet developed the techniques that would define Egyptian funerary practice for three millennia. There were no stone tombs, no canopic jars, no Books of the Dead. Burial was simpler: a pit, a flexed body, a few grave goods. The preservation that resulted was accidental, not intended. But the tattoos were intentional. The bull and the sheep are not decorative abstractions; they are specific animals, rendered with attention to detail. Tattooing in this period required pigment, a puncturing tool, and skill. The placement on the upper arm and shoulder suggests display. These were marks meant to be seen in life, not hidden. The wound suggests violence was not rare. Predynastic Egypt was not a unified state but a collection of competing communities along the Nile. Conflict over resources, territory, or status left marks in the archaeological record: fortified settlements, weapons in graves, and injuries on bodies. This wound fits that pattern. Whether it was murder, combat, or execution cannot be determined from the evidence, but it was a blade in the back, and it was fatal.

Why it matters now

This body has been on display for over a century, and the way it has been shown reflects changing attitudes toward human remains in museums. Early labels treated it as a curiosity, evidence of a preservation technique that nature stumbled upon before embalmers refined it. The nickname Ginger was used casually, as though the body were an object rather than a person. Current British Museum policy requires that human remains be displayed with explicit justification and respect. The label now identifies the body as a person who lived and died. The reconstructed grave context is an attempt to restore some of the original burial environment, rather than isolating the body as a specimen. The CT scan and infrared imaging are examples of non-invasive techniques that extract information without further disturbing the remains. The wound was always there, but invisible until imaging technology made it legible. The tattoos were always there, but required infrared light to render them visible against the desiccated skin. These technologies allow museums to learn from human remains without subjecting them to destructive analysis. The body is also evidence in debates about the origins of mummification. Natural preservation in sand graves may have been observed by later Egyptians and understood as desirable. The leap to intentional mummification — evisceration, natron, wrapping — required recognising that the sand's effect could be replicated by other means. Whether that observation actually drove the development of embalming techniques is speculative, but the sequence is chronologically plausible.

The surprising detail

The tattoos were invisible for over a century. The body was excavated in 1896, acquired by the British Museum in 1900, and displayed from 1901 onward. Visitors saw the desiccated skin, the ginger hair, the flexed position. But the tattoos on the shoulder and arm were not detected until 2018, when infrared imaging revealed pigment that was present but not visible to the naked eye against the darkened skin. A second body from the same grave group, a female, was found to bear tattoos as well. Both are now among the earliest known examples of figurative tattoos preserved on human skin. The bull and the sheep had been there all along, unseen in plain sight.

How it got here

The body was excavated by Wallis Budge in 1896 from Gebelein and acquired by the British Museum in 1900. Budge's excavation methods were not rigorous by modern standards, and the associated grave goods — documented as pots and flints — were not retained and are now lost. The Egyptian government has not made a formal repatriation claim for the Gebelein bodies, but they remain part of ongoing discussions about the return of human remains and the ethics of displaying them. The British Museum's position is that the educational and research value of the display, conducted respectfully under current policy, justifies continued retention.

Remember this

Natural mummification preceded intentional embalming by centuries, and this body — stabbed, tattooed, and preserved by accident — is older than any pyramid.
