Museum labels rarely mention how much of an object is restoration. This figure, crushed flat in the ground for forty-four centuries, makes the question unavoidable.

Gold leaf over wood
The ram's head and legs are covered in gold leaf, applied over a wooden core that has long since decayed. What Woolley found were fragments of gold foil, collapsed and crumpled where the wood had rotted away. The gold was hammered thin enough to follow the contours of carved wood, and it survives because gold does not corrode. The wood beneath it did not survive at all.
Lapis lazuli from Afghanistan
The fleece is made from lapis lazuli, a deep blue stone that does not occur in southern Iraq. The nearest source is Badakhshan in what is now Afghanistan, over two thousand kilometres away. By the middle of the third millennium BC, Sumerian cities were importing lapis through overland trade networks. Using it for a votive object was a statement of wealth and access.
Shell and red limestone
The ram stands against a flowering plant rendered in gold, with shell inlays for the blossoms and red limestone for details. Shell, like lapis, was imported — probably from the Persian Gulf. The combination of materials from different regions, assembled with precision, indicates specialist workshops and coordinated supply lines.
The story
Leonard Woolley excavated the Royal Cemetery at Ur between 1922 and 1934, and in 1928 he uncovered two similar figures in a deposit he associated with a woman he called Queen Puabi. The name "Ram in a Thicket" came from Woolley himself, who connected the figures to the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac. The connection is not supported by any Sumerian text, and the term is now understood as a romantic flourish rather than an identification. The figures are more accurately described as goats, not rams, and they are not caught in anything — they are standing upright, forelegs resting on the branches of a stylised plant.
What Woolley found was not a sculpture. It was a scatter of materials: fragments of gold foil, pieces of lapis lazuli, shell, and red limestone, all lying in the soil where a wooden core had decayed. The organic structure had collapsed, and the inlays had fallen with it. Woolley's task was not simply to clean and record the object. It was to infer what it had been, and then to rebuild it.
He stabilised the metal with molten wax, which he poured over the fragments to hold them in place during lifting. Once the pieces were out of the ground, he constructed a new wooden armature and reassembled the inlays onto it, guided by their positions in the soil and by the shapes of the surviving pieces. The result is a hybrid: ancient surface, modern support. The gold, lapis, shell and limestone are Sumerian. The wood, the wax, and the arrangement are twentieth-century interpretations.
This is not unusual. Most composite objects from waterlogged, crushed, or burned contexts require similar interventions. Metal corrodes, wood rots, textiles disintegrate, and adhesives fail. What survives is often a kit of parts, not a coherent whole. The archaeologist's role is to recover the parts and propose a reconstruction. The proposal is based on evidence — the position of fragments, traces of organic materials, comparisons with better-preserved examples — but it remains a proposal. Another archaeologist, working with the same fragments, might make different decisions.
Woolley was working in an era when reconstruction was standard practice, and when the priority was to present objects in a form that museum visitors could understand. He did not publish a detailed account of his restoration process, and the extent of his interventions was not always made explicit in labels or catalogues. That has changed. Contemporary practice requires documentation of every stage of conservation, and museums now distinguish clearly between original material and restoration. But the objects themselves remain hybrids, and the Ram in a Thicket is a particularly clear example. You are looking at Sumerian craftsmanship, but you are also looking at Woolley's interpretation of it.
Why it mattered then
The figures were found in a context Woolley associated with elite burials, and they were probably votive offerings placed in a temple or tomb. Standing animals, especially goats, appear frequently in Sumerian art, often in association with trees or plants. The motif may represent fertility, abundance, or a connection between the domesticated and the wild. The materials — gold, lapis, shell, and red limestone — were all costly and imported, and their combination in a single object demonstrated the patron's resources and the city's trade networks. Ur in the mid-third millennium BC was one of the wealthiest cities in southern Mesopotamia, and objects like this were part of how that wealth was displayed and dedicated to the gods.
Why it matters now
The Ram in a Thicket is now a standard case study in the ethics and practice of archaeological reconstruction. It raises questions that apply to thousands of objects in museums: how much restoration is acceptable? When does reconstruction become invention? Should museums display objects in their excavated state, or present them as they might have looked when new? There is no single answer. Some institutions favour minimal intervention and display fragments as fragments. Others, like Woolley, prioritise legibility and reconstruct where the evidence permits. The Ram in a Thicket sits in the middle of that debate. It is not a fake — the ancient materials are genuine — but it is not entirely ancient either. It is a collaboration between a Sumerian craftsman and a British archaeologist, separated by four thousand years.
The surprising detail
Woolley's use of wax was an emergency measure in the field, not a planned conservation technique. He needed to stabilise the gold fragments quickly so they could be lifted without further disintegration. The wax worked, but it also made later re-examination difficult, because removing it risked damaging the metal. Modern conservators use reversible materials precisely to avoid this problem: any intervention should be undoable by a future conservator with better tools or better information. Woolley's wax is still there, embedded in the object, a permanent record of the moment it was saved.
How it got here
The figure was excavated by Leonard Woolley under a formal excavation permit, and the finds from Ur were divided between the Iraq Museum in Baghdad, the British Museum, and the University of Pennsylvania Museum according to the partage system then in operation. A second, similar figure is in Philadelphia. Iraq has not formally requested the return of the British Museum's figure, but the broader question of partage-era divisions remains contested, and some scholars and Iraqi officials have argued that major finds from Ur should be reunited in Iraq.

Most museum objects are not purely ancient. They are collaborations between the past and the people who dug them up.

Why does it matter that Woolley did not publish a detailed account of how he reconstructed the figure?
Because without documentation, it is difficult to distinguish original evidence from interpretive restoration. A visitor looking at the figure cannot easily tell which parts are positioned according to clear archaeological evidence and which reflect Woolley's best guess. Later scholars cannot revisit his decisions or propose alternative reconstructions without disassembling the object, which risks damaging it. This is why modern conservation standards require full documentation: not because restoration is wrong, but because future researchers need to know what was found and what was inferred. Woolley's reconstruction may be correct, but we cannot fully verify it, and that limits what the object can tell us.
