Chinese Jade Bi Disc

Gold was rare in early China, but it was not precious in the way jade was. Jade demanded months of labour, resisted every shortcut, and emerged cold to the touch and impossibly smooth.

The central hole
The hole is not drilled in the modern sense. Neolithic craftsmen used a hollow reed or bamboo tube, charged with abrasive sand, rotated under pressure. The tube wore away the jade gradually, leaving a circular void. The walls of the hole often show faint concentric grooves from the grinding motion. Later examples have more regular perforations, but the method remained fundamentally the same: abrasion, not cutting.
Surface finish
Jade takes a polish that feels almost wet. The surface is achieved by progressively finer abrasives, possibly ending with leather or plant material charged with fine powders. Under magnification, the finish shows no tool marks in the usual sense—no scratches from a blade edge—only the result of sustained rubbing. The labour involved is difficult to overstate. A single bi might represent hundreds of hours of work.
Hardness
Nephrite jade registers between 6 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale, harder than most steel. Bronze tools, the most advanced metal available during much of the bi's production history, are softer. This is why jade was worked by abrasion rather than carving. The stone was ground down with quartz sand, itself harder than jade, applied with tools of wood, bamboo or bone. The material dictated the method, and the method dictated the time.
The story
The bi is a flat disc of jade with a hole in the centre. The proportions vary—some are thin rings, others are broad discs with small perforations—but the form is consistent across more than three thousand years. The earliest examples come from the Neolithic Liangzhu culture in the Yangtze River Delta, dating to around 3400 BCE. Production continued through the Shang, Zhou and Han dynasties, and the form was occasionally reproduced in glass.
Jade in China means nephrite, a tough silicate mineral that forms in metamorphic rocks. It is not the same material as the jadeite prized in later periods and other regions, though both are called jade in English. Nephrite is hard, dense, and fractures in a way that makes it difficult to work. It cannot be chipped like flint or carved like softer stone. The only practical method available to Neolithic craftsmen was abrasion: grinding the stone down with harder materials, principally quartz sand, applied with tools of bamboo, wood or bone.
This is slow work. A modern experiment using reconstructed Neolithic methods took over two hundred hours to produce a single small bi. The process begins with shaping the outer circumference, then forming the central hole by rotating a hollow tube charged with abrasive. The final polish requires progressively finer abrasives and sustained effort. The result is a surface that feels cold and smooth, almost slippery, with no visible tool marks.
Why go to this trouble? The answer is not entirely clear, but jade was evidently valued far beyond its material rarity. It does not tarnish, it is difficult to damage, and it produces a clear note when struck. Early Chinese texts associate jade with moral qualities—hardness, purity, resonance—but these texts postdate the earliest bi by millennia. We cannot be certain that Neolithic users attached the same meanings.
The function of the bi is disputed. Later texts describe them as symbols of heaven, the circular form representing the dome of the sky. Some bi have been found in burials, placed on the body or near it, which suggests a ritual or protective role. Others show signs of wear, as though they were handled or suspended. A few large examples may have been too heavy for regular use and might have served as prestige objects or temple fittings. The Liangzhu culture produced bi in large numbers, often decorated with intricate patterns, which implies organised workshops and perhaps standardised meanings, but no written records survive to confirm what those meanings were.
By the Han dynasty, bi were being placed in burials as part of elaborate jade suits, and texts from this period do describe them as celestial symbols. Whether this represents a continuous tradition from the Neolithic or a later reinterpretation is uncertain. The form persisted, but the context changed.
Why it mattered then
Jade was rare, but not as rare as gold. What made it precious was the labour it demanded and the qualities it exhibited once finished. It did not corrode, it could not be easily broken, and it took a finish that no other available stone could match. In a society without written records, durable objects carried meanings across generations, and jade's resistance to decay made it a suitable medium for whatever those meanings were. The bi form appears in contexts that suggest importance: burials, hoards, and deposits that may have been ritual. The Liangzhu culture, which produced the earliest and most numerous examples, was a complex society with irrigated rice agriculture, large settlement mounds, and evidence of social stratification. Jade working was a specialised craft, and the concentration of bi in certain burials suggests they marked status or role. The circular form with a central void is geometrically simple but symbolically open. Later Chinese thought associated circles with heaven and squares with earth, and the bi's shape fits neatly into that cosmology. Whether Neolithic users thought in these terms is unknowable, but the persistence of the form across millennia suggests it carried weight.
Why it matters now
The bi is a reminder that value is not intrinsic. Jade is hard and takes a polish, but these are physical properties, not explanations. The value came from what people were willing to do to obtain and work it, and from the meanings they attached to the result. In early China, that value exceeded gold. The method of working jade—abrasion over months—also offers a perspective on craft. There are no shortcuts in grinding nephrite. The material resists speed, and the quality of the finish depends on sustained, careful effort. This is not romantic; it is mechanical fact. The bi is the record of that effort. For scholars, the bi poses questions about continuity and reinterpretation. The form remains recognisable from the Neolithic to the Han dynasty, but the contexts change. Were later users continuing a tradition they understood, or reusing a form whose original meaning had been forgotten? The answer matters for how we think about cultural transmission and the stability of symbols over long periods.
The surprising detail
Some bi were also made in glass. This is attested from later periods, and the glass examples often imitate the colour and translucency of jade. The imitation is revealing: glass is easier to work and can be cast or blown into shape, yet the form being copied is that of a material defined by its resistance to easy working. The value of the bi, in other words, was not solely in the material but in the form itself and what it signified. A glass bi could carry some of that significance, even though the labour involved was a fraction of what nephrite required.
What is disputed
The original function and meaning of Neolithic bi are uncertain. Later texts describe them as symbols of heaven, but these sources postdate the earliest examples by more than two thousand years. Archaeological context shows bi in burials and possible ritual deposits, but without written records from the Liangzhu culture, we cannot confirm what they signified to their makers. The association with heaven may be a Han dynasty interpretation imposed on an older form.
