Colossal Bust of Ramesses II

Giovanni Belzoni levered this granite head from the Ramesseum using palm-fibre rope and rollers. While it was being crated for London, Percy Shelley wrote a sonnet about a shattered colossus in the desert.

The Nazca Lines

Nazca · 200 BC–AD 500 · Nazca Desert, southern Peru

Between 500 BC and 500 AD, people cleared dark pebbles from the Nazca Desert to expose pale soil beneath, creating lines and animals visible for kilometres. Most are best seen from above.
