  1. The colour contrast

    The Nazca Desert floor is covered in reddish-brown pebbles coated with ferric oxide. Beneath them lies yellow-grey subsoil. The lines were made by removing the top layer of stones to expose the paler ground. The contrast is not dramatic — both surfaces are earth tones — but in the stable, dry climate of the plateau, the difference has remained visible for two thousand years. The lines are typically ten to fifteen centimetres deep.

  2. Single continuous lines

    Most of the figurative designs — the hummingbird, the monkey, the spider — are formed from a single unbroken line. The maker did not lift the tool or start again. This means planning the route in advance so that the line could traverse the entire figure and return to near its starting point without crossing itself. The largest figures are about 370 metres (1213 ft 11 in) long. More than seventy zoomorphic designs have been identified, alongside hundreds of straight lines and geometric shapes.

    Some of the shapes are best seen from the air, at around 500 metres (1640 ft 5 in) altitude, though they are also visible from the surrounding foothills. The story

The Nazca Lines are geoglyphs: figures made by altering the ground surface rather than building on it. They were created by people of the Nazca culture in southern Peru, working across several centuries. The method was subtractive. The desert floor is covered with dark, reddish-brown pebbles coated in iron oxide. By removing these stones and exposing the yellow-grey subsoil beneath, the makers created lines that contrast with the surrounding surface.

The lines vary in width from thirty centimetres to nearly two metres, and in complexity from simple straight tracks to elaborate zoomorphic figures. More than seventy animal designs have been identified, including a hummingbird, a monkey, a spider, and a condor. Most are formed from a single continuous line that traces the entire figure without crossing itself. The largest are around 370 metres (1213 ft 11 in) long. Alongside these are hundreds of straight lines and geometric shapes. The combined length of all the lines exceeds 1,300 kilometres (186 mi), spread across an area of about fifty square kilometres.

The lines have survived because the climate is stable, dry, and nearly windless. Rare weather changes may alter them temporarily, but the plateau's isolation has preserved most of the designs naturally. In recent years, drone surveys have identified several hundred new figures, and archaeologists expect more remain to be found.

The question of why they were made has generated more speculation than evidence. The extraterrestrial hypothesis — that the lines were landing strips or messages for alien visitors — appeared in the mid-twentieth century and has no scholarly support. It rests on the assumption that ancient people could not have created large-scale designs without aerial guidance, which is incorrect. The lines were made with simple tools and could be planned using ground-level sightlines and stakes.

More plausible interpretations focus on water and ritual. The Nazca region is one of the driest on Earth, and water management was central to survival. Some researchers have noted that certain lines point toward water sources or align with underground aquifers. Others suggest the lines were pathways for ceremonial processions, possibly connected to rain or fertility rituals. The fact that many figures are best seen from elevated foothills supports the idea that they were meant to be viewed, perhaps by communities gathering for seasonal ceremonies.

Scholars differ on specifics, but most agree the lines held religious significance. The effort required to create them — clearing tonnes of stones across kilometres — suggests they were not casual or decorative. They were made over centuries, which implies a sustained cultural practice rather than a single project. The lines were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

The Nazca Desert is one of the driest places on Earth. Water was scarce, seasonal, and the organising fact of life. The lines were made by a culture whose survival depended on understanding when and where water would appear. If the lines were connected to water — as pathways to sources, markers of aquifers, or ritual routes walked to ensure rain — then they were not decorative. They were infrastructure, both practical and sacred. The scale of the project suggests collective labour sustained over generations. Squatters, vehicle tracks, and even well-meaning tourists have damaged sections. In 2014, Greenpeace activists walked near the hummingbird figure during a publicity stunt, leaving footprints in protected ground. Preservation is not straightforward when the artwork is fifty square kilometres of open desert. The lines also remain a test case for how we interpret ancient cultures. The extraterrestrial hypothesis is a reminder that spectacular theories can overshadow evidence. It is easier to imagine alien intervention than to credit ancient people with planning, geometry, and sustained labour. The lines were made by humans, with tools and time. That is the more impressive fact. Finally, the lines are an example of art that depends on context. Seen from the ground, many figures are illegible. Seen from the air, they resolve into shapes. But the people who made them could not fly. If the lines were meant to be seen from above, the intended viewer was not human. That is not evidence of aliens; it is evidence of a culture that created images for gods, ancestors, or the sky itself. The lines are a record of a relationship with landscape that we do not fully understand, made by people who shaped fifty square kilometres of desert and left almost no other trace.

The surprising detail

Several hundred new Nazca Lines have been discovered in the twenty-first century using drones. The technology allows archaeologists to survey areas that are difficult to access on foot and to spot faint contrasts in the desert surface that are invisible at ground level. The discoveries include both figurative designs and geometric patterns, and researchers believe more remain hidden. The site is larger and more complex than was understood even a decade ago.

What is disputed

The purpose of the Nazca Lines is genuinely unresolved. Interpretations range from water-related ritual pathways to ceremonial processions to astronomical alignments, but no single explanation has been conclusively demonstrated. Some lines do point toward water sources or align with aquifers, but not all do. The religious significance of the lines is broadly accepted, but the specific practices they supported remain unknown. New discoveries continue to complicate the picture.
