Day 286

The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking.

Albert Einstein · Physics and Reality
Small tempera panel of the Madonna holding an apple toward a naked Child who stands on a yellow stone cube in a courtyard closed by a crenellated wall with towers; a vase of red flowers nearby.

I · THE OBJECT · BRITISH MUSEUM

A rectangular metal box with a visible top cover, showing the internal mechanism of a hard disk drive with circular platters and a moving actuator arm holding the read-write heads.

II · THE DISCOVERY · HISTORY OF SCIENCE

Hard disk

1956 · magnetic storage device · IBM (1956 model)

IBM's 1956 disk drive used rigid rotating platters coated with magnetic material. The principle — moving heads reading and writing to spinning surfaces — persists in data centres today.

A woman in a blue garment stands in a quiet interior, head bent over a pale letter held in both hands, the small canvas tightly framed around her figure.

III · THE WORK · ART HISTORY

Woman in Blue Reading a Letter

Johannes Vermeer · 1664 · Oil on canvas

A woman in blue stands absorbed in a letter. Vermeer gives almost nothing away about the sender, the room, or her thoughts — and that restraint is the point.

IV · THE GAME · MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Orlando Cepeda

First Base · 15 April 1958 · 17 September 1937, Ponce, Puerto Rico

The Giants put eight runs on the board in Cepeda's first game and the Dodgers managed none of them. Six hits for Los Angeles, eleven for San Francisco, and a shutout.
